It also depends on which gym you go to (college gym, gym at work, public gym). I'd say most women in public gyms would be in for weight loss and toning. Of course there are also others who are using the machines to get fitter in their chosen sport. You don't have to go to the gym to get fit and fast in a certain sport, but its convenient for the busy lifestyle nowadays. Years ago a gym was mainly there for athletes to support their specific training. Today its also there to compromise our sedentary lifestyle and simply to keep us in shape. A lot of women won't take the time off to go for a proper long run or spin on the bike. Its convenient to hop into the gym next door for a quick session. They might not do a super workout, but they do something for their health.

And, yes, getting fit and looking good goes hand in hand. Trying to look good doesn't have to be a by-product, it can be (and often is) the main reason, too.

At the moment I am using the gym to maintain some of my fitness as I find it a very safe environment for exercising while pregnant. I was fine going climbing and running until I was 6 month pregnant, but then I had to change my focus and trying to find exercise which I could still do with the growing bump, varicose veins and the likes.Sonjahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01816243195442985264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-39793040211534579372014-04-20T15:05:02.794-07:002014-04-20T15:05:02.794-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Sonjahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01816243195442985264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-30593397885210783102014-02-15T13:48:07.187-08:002014-02-15T13:48:07.187-08:00Thank you for your comment . Fitness relates to cardio irrespective of strength and conditioning. I am of course biased and my own gym work is to support what I do in relation to my sport. I suppose what I am questioning is why more so on the female side of things , that exercise regimes seem to be linked to diets as in eating less, while the men more tend to go for the protein shakes. Think that might be what my next blog will be about :-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10468309765586170216noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-38926847754187591992014-02-15T13:33:31.695-08:002014-02-15T13:33:31.695-08:00Hey none of us stand up to too much scrutiny! The article sets out to question whether the focus is changing from fitness to just looking good, which of course is a by product of fitness anyway. The worry being that if someone looks good, then they have no need for fitness which we all know to be untrueAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15056471303447729797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-66590844412355119242014-02-14T04:34:59.007-08:002014-02-14T04:34:59.007-08:00Form follows function.

Sure, dropping my body fat % has happened. But, I'm much more interested in the performance results from that as opposed to "trying to get ripped".

Honestly, I am too old and have too much loose skin to worry about that anyway. And I'd rather spend money on hockey gear than plastic surgery.James Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04181293044620877342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-7119699048236945002014-02-13T06:31:00.073-08:002014-02-13T06:31:00.073-08:00I think your on basis is showing. You and Baby K will both benifit greatly from your approach. So many women are afraid to start anything like that when pregnant. Sounds like you have very supportive OB to which really helps. Keep up the good work, I found i had lots more energy then most people towards the end thanks to all the exercise!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10468309765586170216noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-74276086291582894592013-10-15T02:38:41.916-07:002013-10-15T02:38:41.916-07:00Thanks Sheri, Just read your comment - somehow i m...Thanks Sheri, Just read your comment - somehow i missed it until now - Sounds like your getting great support there which is always good to hear. While I've always been athletic and strong, my inactive lifestyle (mixed with not-so-great eating) led to me becoming seriously overweight. In fact, I was the heaviest I've ever been when we found out (very surprisingly) I was pregnant. At the time I had an episode with gallstones, but as soon as I recovered, I joined the local gym. I knew this was the perfect time to make better lifestyle choices and minimize weight gain. With diligence, I've managed to LOSE 18lbs since June. My OB doctor is very pleased and supportive, especially since Baby K is growing and developing perfectly. (Last week, I had a growth scan ultrasound and, at 29 weeks, he measured 3lbs, 3oz.) I'm not being stupid or irresponsible at the gym -- I do water aerobics 3-5 days a week, Yoga, cardio (treadmill) and light weights. If I'm feeling up to it, I'll participate in BodyPump, Pure Barre, and Zumba classes. My fitness trainers are wonderful and very supportive too, offering advice and alternative moves to accommodate my tempo and growing belly! I also wear a heart-rate monitor watch and I'm diligent to keep my HR at 140 or below. Besides the exercise, I've also improved my diet since the gallbladder issue and pregnancy announcement. I eliminated completely sweet tea and fried foods (a big deal for this Southern girl!!!) and added more fruits, vegetables, lean means, and LOTS of water. After delivery, I will continue this positive trend, especially since I plan to breastfeed. Nicole M. I really appreciate them as there are so few decent resources online for how to best road cycle when pregnant that aren't just fear-mongering ones that tell you not to ride at all. I'm 20 weeks in with my baby girl and my doctor had me keep my heart rate below 140 for the first trimester, and then my OB is just telling me to not worry about a specific number in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters but focus on staying comfortable and not do anything that would risk falling or anything I might regret, so I've been so happy getting out and more active again now that I have energy. I have found good bib shorts and jerseys with no elastic on the bottom to be my saving grace for a comfortable ride. We've got a great bike path network here in Ottawa and Gatineau, Canada so at least it's easy to go for a long ride with minimal road time.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06615135722731827728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5683593074533417823.post-2644359983857503902013-03-26T09:44:56.365-07:002013-03-26T09:44:56.365-07:00Listen to your body.
